Circling the base of the Washington Memorial in Washington DC, American flags fly at half-mast in the week after the September 11th attacks on the USA. The 555 foot (170m) high marble, granite and sandstone Memorial on the National Mall honours George Washington. Completed in 1884, it remains the world's tallest stone structure.
