Irrigation waters from the passing 'Levada Pionais' and Banana fruit crops growing abundantly in the fertile soils of southern Madeira, on 22nd April 2024, in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. Bananas are picked for export when still green in colour but due to its small size, the Madeira banana is only exported to mainland Portugal and doesn't correspond to the EU criteria for exporting to other countries. 'Levadas' are waterway aquaduct irrigation systems unique to the Portuguese island of Madeira, stretching from town to town, delivering a highly-efficient irrigation supply to remote and urban communities, some created in the 16th century.
