The Loamy Vales

During a week in Dorset, we walked ancient lanes and pathways, the 'loamy vales' of old Wessex that Thomas Hardy described in 'Tess of the d'Urbevilles'.
With gales roaring across his coastal escarpments, we hugged Portland Bill and Lyme Regis - and when it eased off we kept inland a bit at Purbeck and on top of Maiden castle where the folds of neolithic settlement still provided easy dreams of history.
These are the first black and white landscapes I've made for two years, after the book 'A Fortunate Woman: A Country Doctor's Story' that I made with Polly Morland.
In doing so, after a year of frenetic reportage, I realised that I missed taking quiet looks at rural land and sea, where I found solace in unchallenged peace and beauty."
